Canada’s Deep Rural South

Fried chicken

What a way to start off a weekend in June! The South Coast Wineries and Growers Association held ‘An Orchard Affair,’ their third annual craft cider, beer, and wine tasting night at The Cider Keg. The music by the Jess Murphy Trio was toe tappin’ good fun and the food and beverage was on point!

An amazing pairing that came out of this wonderful evening was inspired by John Riley’s book called The Once and Future Great Lakes Country that references Norfolk County as ‘Canada’s deep rural south’. Cravings Food Truck has certainly taken on that vibe, providing deep fried goodness in many forms. Not only was deep fried grilled cheese on the menu, their coveted chicken and waffles were also being featured for the evening.

Cravings fried chicken (featured above) paired wonderfully with Bonnieheath Estates’ Fresh Apple hard cider. The delightful effervescence from the cider dancing along your lips paired with the gloriously decadent, buttery fried chicken makes for a perfect pair. Adding a bit of hot sauce to the mix kicked up this pairing adding a sweet and spicy aspect to this pairing that we were big fans of. If you have a chance to try either of these two delectable items, run, don’t walk!

Until next time…
